SusTec shares their insights on the role of utilities in the energy transition at neo.forum in Luzern

On June 7th 2018 SusTec researcher Simon Sinsel will lead a workshop on the role of large electric utilities in the energy transition. Simon will present and discuss two studies from SusTec researchers with industry representatives at the forum.

by Simon Robert Sinsel

In the first study Fanny Frei and colleagues investigate the evolution of business activities of 25 of the largest electric utilities worldwide from 2003–2015. They find three successive developments that differ in their intensity: decarbonization, decentralization & servitization, and system integration & balancing.

The second study from Jan Ossenbrink and colleagues digs deeper and analyzes how and why Germany’s biggest four utilities approached the challenges of the energy transition. They find three managerial approaches which these utilities have utilized to cope with the energy transition: structural approaches, contextual approaches and hybrid approaches.

Both studies are currently under review at peer-reviewed journals. In case of questions, please contact Simon Sinsel.
