Dr. Siobhan Powell awarded ETH Postdoc Fellowship

We congratulate Dr. Siobhan Powell for successfully winning an ETH Postdoctoral Fellowship, which she will use to pursue her research on policies for large-scale grid integration of electric vehicles.

Dr. Siobhan Powell has been awarded an ETH Postdoctoral Fellowship to support her research with the group for the next two years.

Electric vehicle (EV) charging will couple the transportation and electricity sectors together for the first time, bringing both challenges and opportunities. Siobhan’s research addresses the use of policy and technical tools to manage charging and improve the impact of EVs on the electricity grid. The project will focus on two important, yet underestimated levers of flexibility in EV charging and how they can shape demand by shaping driver behavior: EV charging infrastructure and pricing.

Building on Downloadwork from her PhD, Siobhan plans to develop a modeling framework that uses charging infrastructure policy to co-optimize the grid and EV transitions. When should more support be given to home vs. workplace vs. public stations? How does that impact the grid’s transition and emissions?

This research is urgently needed early in the transition, as today’s decisions will shape the future landscape of charging. Governments and utilities influence where and when charging stations are built. Decisions made now during the roll-out of new infrastructure will affect where future drivers charge, shape the timing and flexibility of their demand, and determine their impact on the grid
