Article on future energy storage systems in Swiss neighborhoods published

The researchers from Empa’s DownloadUrban Energy Systems Lab and SusTec model the performance of long- and short-term decentralized energy storage systems and apply a multi-objective optimization approach for 2015 to 2050 in three future scenarios. The model is then used to investigate the performance of two Swiss case studies, one rural (the village of Zernez) and one urban (the neighborhood of Zurich’s Altstetten). Thereby, the long-term storage potential with power-to-hydrogen to shift renewable surpluses is assessed. They find that power-to-hydrogen can become feasible at high renewable surpluses between 2035 and 2050 and that neighborhoods with low renewable surpluses can shift loads with short-term storage. In addition, building retrofits are identified equally important for meeting emission reduction targets in buildings.
