Tobias is a senior researcher at the Chair of Sustainability and Technology and a visiting scholar at Stanford University's Precourt Energy Efficiency Center. He also serves as lecturer for ETH Zurich's Department of Humanities, Social and Political Sciences and works as part-time consultant for the United Nations Development Programme's (UNDP) Environment & Energy Group on de-risking renewable energy investment (DREI). 

In his research, which is published in journals like Nature Climate Change, Renewable & Sustainable Energy Reviews, Energy Policy or Climate Policy, he analyzes the role of public policy and regulation in inducing low carbon technological change in the energy sector. A focus lies on technology and country differences. Currently he mainly analyses innovation and diffusion of power generation and storage technologies. His research covers both developed and developing countries.

Tobias acts as ad-hoc reviewer for numerous journals, such as Nature Climate Change, Climatic ChangeClimate Policy, Energy Policy or Renewable Energy. He also writes for ETH Zurich's ZukunftsBlog.

Tobias holds a BSc and Dipl. Ing. (MSc equivalent) in Electrical/Energy Engineering from TU München and a PhD from ETH Zurich (Management, Technology, and Economics). He has gained practical experience working amongst others for Siemens, MAN, and the UN's Department for Economic and Social Affairs (DESA). He received several scholarships, including a 5-year scholarship by the German National Academic Foundation (Studienstiftung).
