Divya Balakrishnan joined the Group of Sustainability and Technology in April 2015 as an exchange student from Karlsruhe Institute of Technology. In her master's thesis, she focused on identifying different features that define energy hubs. Furthermore, her work involved creating a framework of criteria for the same, considering academically oriented as well as practical scenarios.

Divya holds a Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering from Osmania University, India. She is currently enrolled at the KIC InnoEnergy dual master's degree of Energy Technologies (ENTECH). She completed the first year of the master's course at Instituto Superior Tecnico in Lisboa (Portugal) and is enrolled at Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, Karlsruhe (Germany) for the second year.

Prior to this, she has worked at a hydraulics based small scale industry in India in various technical and management-related positions. She further had the opportunity to work as an analyst and consultant at SIIPL under their sustainable environment and business advisory practices. During the master's programme semester break, she also interned at IBIS Power, a Dutch wind energy start-up, where she supported the wind turbine design for their "Integrated roof wind energy system".
