New article on sectoral knowledge creation for lithium-ion batteries published

Researchers from SusTec and the Energy Politics Group (EPG) have analysed how different sectors linked in a technology’s value chain can affect innovation processes. In their new paper published in Research Policy, they investigate knowledge creation processes in the lithium-ion battery (LIB) technology in Japan.

They apply a value chain perspective on LIBs and analyse the roles that the different sectors involved in the LIB value chain (e.g., mining, chemicals, electronics, or transportation) play for knowledge development and diffusion. Their paper integrates a sectoral dimension into the widely applied technological innovation system framework. Based on a quantitative analysis of patent data for LIBs in Japan (1985-2005), they find that sectors vary in the importance for knowledge development and diffusion, especially with regard to LIB development over time.
